Prince’s ex-wife, Mayte Garcia, plans to pull the curtain back on her private life with the late rock icon on the one-year anniversary of his death. Hachette Books announced that it is prepping The Most Beautiful: My Life With Prince for release on April 14, 2017, describing the 304-page book as a “uniquely intimate, candid and revelatory look inside the personal and professional life of one of the world’s most beloved icons.”
Singer/dancer Garcia was married to Prince for four years (1996-1999), during which they suffered the loss of their newborn son, Boy Gregory, who died a week after his birth as a result of the rare disorder Pfeiffer syndrome. “In The Most Beautiful, a title inspired by the hit song Prince wrote about their legendary love story, Mayte Garcia for the first time shares the deeply personal story of their relationship and offers a singular perspective on the music icon and their world together: from their unconventional meeting backstage at a concert (and the long-distance romance that followed), to their fairy-tale wedding (and their groundbreaking artistic partnership), to the devastating losses that ultimately dissolved their romantic relationship for good,” reads the description of the book.
Garcia was on hand last month at a Minneapolis concert to honor the memory of Prince, who died on April 21 of a drug overdose of the painkiller Fentanyl at age 57. In a press release announcing the book, Garcia wrote, “For many years, people have encouraged me to share my story. Prince was loved the world over but few knew him intimately. And ours was a rare, almost otherworldly connection. I want to share our love story, and with it the highs and lows — always coming from a loving place, as this man is still part of my family and always will be.”
Hachette Book Vice President/Publisher Mauro DiPreta said that while Prince was one of the most popular artists in the world, he was also one of the most mysterious. “We’re incredibly fortunate to have Mayte share her deeply personal story about the mind and life of someone we think of as an icon — but whom she knew as a friend, collaborator, and the love of her life,” he said in announcing the book.
In addition, the summary of the memoir promises, “No one else can tell this story or can provide a deeper, more nuanced portrait of Prince–both the famously private man and the pioneering, beloved artist — than Mayte, his partner during some of the most pivotal personal and professional years of his career. The Most Beautiful is a book that will be returned to for decades, as Prince’s music lives on with generations to come.”
