Customers who noticed mold or foul odors in their front-loading washing machines could be eligible for a cash rebate or a reimbursement for repairs.
Customers brought a class-action lawsuit against Whirlpool and Sears over complaints that the washers were not self-cleaning. They can leave behind slimy mold, mildew and laundry residue, ruining laundry.
The website set up for the lawsuit states that if customers have a Whirlpool, Kenmore, or Maytag front-loading washing machine manufactured between 2001 and 2010, they are eligible for $50, as well as a rebate when purchasing a new machine or
reimbursement for repairs on the current washer.
Customers who have an LG washer purchased between 2002 and 2006 may be eligible for $35 and a cash rebate if they purchase another front-loading washer.
To qualify for the rebate, customers must submit a claim form by Oct. 11.

To prevent mold and mildew on front-loading washers, Consumer Reports offers some advice:
- Wipe down the glass and door gasket daily.
- Run a dehumidifier in the laundry room.
- Leave the door slightly open between washes. If you have young children, keep the laundry room locked.
- Remove detergent buildup from the dispenser.
- Every month, run a cup of chlorine bleach and hot water through the machine without laundry.
- If these tips don’t work, call the manufacturer for service and save all the paperwork.
